Leitra Young Maxwell
Attorney Leitra Young Maxwell is an associate in the Gist Law Firm. Her practice areas include Family Law, Employment Law, Worker’s Compensation, Probate and Estates, and Personal Injury. She is licensed to practice before the State Court of South Carolina and the Federal Court.
While attending Furman, Attorney Maxwell recognized that minorities and women still face tremendous obstacles in the work force, such as wage discrepancies, discrimination, and harassment. As a result, Attorney Maxwell is ecstatic to be working for firm whose principal practice is employment discrimination and worker’s rights.
Attorney Maxwell received her Jurist Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2004. During law school, Attorney Maxwell was a recipient of the Strom Thurmond Scholarship and served as president for the BLSA, the Black Law Students Association. Attorney Maxwell was also an active member of Women in Law.
In 2001, Attorney Maxwell graduated from Furman University with a degree in English and Political Science. Attorney Maxwell, a recipient of an athletic scholarship to Furman, was captain of the Furman Women’s Basketball team for two consecutive years and played on two NCAA Division I Southern Conference Championship teams.
In an effort to remain active in the community Attorney Maxwell is a member of the American Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division, Columbia Lawyers Association, Richland County Bar Association and South Carolina Black Lawyer's Association. She is also a member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Columbia, South Carolina and a member of the Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Attorney Maxwell is married to Shawn L. Maxwell and they have one daughter.
